Vormetric Demonstrates SAP HANA® In The Cloud With Enhanced Security

February 24, 2014

Vormetric Transparent Encryption™ Adds Data-centric Security in Technology Demo at RSA Conference 2014

SAN JOSE, Calif. – February 24, 2014 – Vormetric, a leader in enterprise data security for physical, virtual and cloud environments, today announced that it will be demonstrating its cloud security technology with Virtustream and Intel at the upcoming RSA Conference 2014 in San Francisco February 24-28. The project, which has been fostered by the SAP® Co-Innovation Lab, demonstrates the SAP HANA® platform running in the cloud on the latest Intel® Xeon® processor E7 v2 family. The managed service is performed by Virtustream, and security for the persistent storage in SAP HANA is provided by Vormetric Transparent Encryption™ through privileged-user controls, encryption, and security intelligence that have no noticeable performance impact on the user experience. The Vormetric technology makes it possible for the customer to be the sole custodian of the keys in encryption and access control.

The first demonstrations of this combined technology project will be at RSA Conference 2014 in the Vormetric booth 515 Moscone Center, South Hall, and in the Intel Security booth 3203 Moscone Center, North Hall. The demonstration will show the Vormetric Transparent Encryption used to protect the persistent storage of SAP HANA through:

  • Fine-grained file-system access control – Privileged users, or advanced persistent threats (APTs) acting as privileged users, will be prevented from accessing the persistent storage in SAP HANA.
  • Encryption and key custodianship – Persistent storage, log files and configuration files are encrypted, and the enterprise customer is the only custodian of encryption keys and access control policies. This means the cloud service provider will not have access to protected data or the ability to access or share encryption keys.
  • Security intelligence – Detailed audit logs will be sent to security information event management (SIEM) systems for analytics and reports on data access patterns. These reports can accelerate the detection of APTs, malware and abusive insiders who typically attempt to exploit the file access blind spot and operate undetected on servers.

Vormetric, Virtustream, Intel, and SAP all worked together to integrate and test the combined configuration. The tests took place at the SAP Co-Innovation Lab, the global laboratory network where members collaborate with SAP to develop and test innovative new technologies and solutions.

Ashvin Kamaraju, vice president of product development and partner management at Vormetric, said, “Attendees of RSA visiting the demo in our booth and in the Intel Security booth will see firsthand how our technology is able to deliver enhanced data-centric security for SAP HANA in cloud environments. Our goal is to ensure customers always control their data, deny third-party administrators access to sensitive data, and give customers the visibility they need for security and compliance. Vormetric is excited to be part of the technology leadership team that the SAP Co-Innovation Lab has brought together to develop innovative cloud solutions that are secure and high-performing at scale.”

“In light of recent major personally identifiable information (PII) breach news, encryption and data security should be top of mind. Our enterprise clients can help reduce this risk by using the Vormetric Transparent Encryption security service. For critical databases and application processes, the Vormetric service offers additional data security, compliance and control in the Virtustream environment,” explained Pete Nicoletti, CISO of Virtustream. “We are excited to be working with the SAP Co-Innovation Lab, Vormetric and Intel on this project and are looking forward to extending the Vormetric Transparent Encryption offering to our managed services clients on SAP HANA.”

“Enterprises are shifting investments to cloud providers that can ensure their sensitive data is protected,” said Shannon Poulin, vice president of marketing for Intel's Data Center Group. “In order to deliver comprehensive data protection during high-transactional loads without perceptual degradation of the user experience, high performance encryption is required. Through the use of the Vormetric Transparent Encryption that takes advantage of Intel Data Protection technology with AES-NI and Secure Key, we expect that enterprises that run SAP HANA on Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 based cloud deployments from Virtustream will now be able to achieve this comprehensive protection.”

“The role of the SAP Co-Innovation Lab is to facilitate project-based co-innovation with its members to connect the innovation of today with the future,” said Dr. Axel Henning Saleck, vice president of the SAP Co-Innovation Lab global network. “We are very pleased to foster the efforts of Intel, Virtustream and Vormetric in developing a solution for SAP HANA in the cloud that will enable the cloud customer to be the sole custodian of policies and encryption keys, transparently controlling privileged-user access and encryption of persistent storage, logs and configuration of SAP HANA.”

Stop by the Vormetric booth 515 Moscone Center, South Hall, or the Intel Security booth 3203 Moscone Center, North Hall, during expo hours and see the Vormetric, Intel, and Virtustream solution for SAP HANA at RSA Conference 2014 in San Francisco February 24-28.
