Vormetric Receives Third Patent For Data Security Technology

April 18, 2007

Security File System Layer Strengthens Multi-Tiered Defense Against External and Insider Threats

SANTA CLARA, CA - April 18, 2007 - Vormetric, Inc. announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has approved the issuance of Patent Number 7,143,288, covering technology that gives the company's clients tight, granular control over both individuals and applications that seek access to vital information protected by Vormetric's CoreGuard solution.

The patented security layer, inserted between the infrastructure's application layer and the underlying operating system, allows a company's security administrators to set access rights and policies or to limit access to system administrators and root users. The security layer also prevents access to protected files by malware and other unauthorized applications.

"We are happy that the Patent Office agrees that the methods designed by Vormetric for controlling access to data by both individuals and applications, as well as for documenting and enforcing separation of duties among system users and administrators, represent unique and original technologies," said Vormetric CEO Mark Pine.

Vormetric, a leader in data security since its founding in 2001, obtained the following U.S. patents in prior years:

  • Patent Number 6,678,828, issued in 2004, covers the CoreGuard security server, the solution's central point of management and a secure storage device for information protection policies and keys.
  • Patent Number 6,931,530, issued in 2005, covers the CoreGuard secure portal for network file operations between client computer systems and network storage resources.

"We are extremely pleased to have received these three fundamental patents that strongly protect the innovations that Vormetric has developed for protecting data. Many of the key technologies behind CoreGuard are now covered by intellectual property rights," continued Pine.

"Organizations that are serious about protecting the information entrusted to them -- whether it's their own proprietary data and intellectual property, or the personal and financial information about their customers -- are realizing that point solutions are not adequate. What's needed is the enterprise-wide defense-in-depth that CoreGuard delivers," added Vormetric vice president of engineering Rick McPhee.

"Such a defense starts with encrypting the data itself and establishing a tight, documented system to control the people and the applications that have access to the data. It is also imperative to maintain the integrity of the underlying operating system and the application infrastructure where the data resides.

"The Core Guard technologies covered by these patents enable our clients to enforce data access policies, keep an audit trail of all attempts at access, and ensure that the files remain protected in the event a hacker is able to penetrate the network," continued McPhee.
