The IRS has reported a large data breach through their “Get Transcript” service. “This incident highlights how previous breaches of data can continue to haunt people long after the actual event,” said Sol Cates, Chief Security Officer, Vormetric, via email. “In this case, hackers leveraged previously stolen Social Security numbers to both access previous year’s tax data and to fraudulently apply for tax returns. The Social Security numbers could have been stolen, or purchased from a black market site, at any time before the attack started.”
