Vormetric CoreGuard Data Security Technology Now Protects Vital Backup Data Through Partnership With Symantec

December 14, 2006

Jointly Devised Solution Meets Demand for Economical, Time-Saving Methods of Protecting Tapes and Offline Information Stores

SANTA CLARA, CA - December 13, 2006 - Vormetric Inc., the acknowledged leader in security solutions that protect sensitive information from unauthorized access, announced today that it has entered an OEM agreement with Symantec Corp. to incorporate Vormetric's patented encryption technology into Symantec's Veritas NetBackup solution for enterprise-level data backup and recovery.

Today's announcement immediately follows Symantec's launch of its Veritas NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO). This new approach uses Vormetric's highly regarded CoreGuard technology to perform data encryption at the enterprise media server rather than at a client device or on a separate appliance.

NetBackup users who opt for MSEO will enjoy simplified management of backup and recovery operations, little or no performance impact even when encrypting large banks of information, and economical, highly secure tape encryption that ensures data privacy. NetBackup tapes encrypted by MSEO protect the encrypted data from unauthorized users if the tapes are lost or stolen.

Vormetric Data Security Leadership Expands to the Backup Arena Through Partnership with Symantec

Symantec MSEO represents the first in the expanding family of products powered by Vormetric technology to protect backup data. Vormetric CoreGuard, introduced in 2003, is the information technology industry's first and only software-scalable data security product. Many government agencies and prominent companies protect their valuable client information and intellectual property with CoreGuard. These clients include BMW, EDS, Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, Retail Ventures/DSW, University of Texas Health Center and PEMCO Technology Services Inc.

"We are pleased to have been working with Symantec on this OEM agreement over the last year. Symantec has been setting our industry's standards in information security, availability, and integrity for more than 25 years," commented Mark Pine, president and CEO of Vormetric. "Our collaborative efforts that culminated in the launch of NetBackup MSEO directly address a booming demand in the marketplace for an easy-to-manage, cost-effective way of eliminating the risks that come with storing data on tape."

"Backup encryption is no longer discretionary -- it's imperative," explained Jon Oltsik, senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. "MSEO, a combination of Vormetric's proven data security and encryption technology and Symantec's backup expertise, is an excellent way for companies to make backup encryption an integral part of their data protection and regulatory compliance strategy."

Advantages of Encrypting Backup Information at the Media Server with MSEO The easily manageable, cost-effective MSEO offers users the following advantages:

  • Administer encryption process within the NetBackup policy
  • No change to backup processes
  • Actively select compression and encryption where it makes sense
  • Scales to accommodate complex combinations of media servers
  • About half the cost of appliance solution
  • No need to procure or support separate hardware encryption devices
  • Standards-based security encryption
  • Centralized "no-touch" key management eliminates the need to manually track which key was used for which tape -- it's automatic
  • Parallelized and selectable encryption and compression

"We increasingly see the importance of providing protection and encryption options within our line of backup products," said Rick Huebsch, vice president, NetBackup product line at Symantec. "The demand for such options has driven our decision to expand this partnership with Vormetric and continue to look for other ways to build protection functionality into our backup solutions."

Availability

MSEO is scheduled for general availability in January 2007. At that time the product will be available from Symantec's worldwide network of value-added resellers, distributors, and systems integrators. MSEO will be available for NetBackup v.5.1 and v.6.0 and will complement NetBackup's existing Client Encryption Option (CEO), which encrypts backup data at the client.

Regulatory Requirements Addressed by MSEO

Government legislation and private regulation requires businesses to protect stored data from theft or accidental loss. These include state disclosure laws in 34 states, The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI), Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Businesses are under pressure to take proper steps -- including encryption -- to prevent unauthorized access to data stored on fixed and removable devices including tape, NAS, SAN, direct attached storage, and notebook computers.
