Green OTP Devices For Digital Banking

Meet our green OTP devices for digital banking

Everyone must act in the face of the permanent over-consumption of our planet's resources. With our new green authentication devices, we want to show that it is possible to combine security and environment to support the banking sector in its sustainability approach.

Our complete offer is constructed around two complementary services:

Second Life

Second life plastic

Every material deserves a second life. We developed a new process to use recycled plastic for our devices. It reduces plastic waste.

Carbon Neutral

Carbon offset

The carbon emissions arising from the raw materials, manufacturing, packaging and distribution of the product have been calculated and offset under The CarbonNeutral Protocol – the leading framework for carbon neutrality.

Introducing second life plastic

To support sustainability strategies and meet rising consumer demands for green and responsible alternatives, our digital banking authentication devices' casings are now made from recycled ABS plastic.

We call this initiative second life plastic, and it reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 50% of the entire outer case of the device compared to using virgin ABS plastic. Switching to recycled plastic reduces plastic leakage to both our land and water ecosystems and is an important step in fighting plastic pollution globally.

We are pioneers in recycling ABS using new technology and a circular design mind-set. This creates a whole new world of opportunities for hard-to-recycle plastics such as ABS.

Black is the new colour for sustainable development. To avoid the additional impact of materials, processes and energy needed to change the plastic's colour, the recycled casing is only available in black.

ABS plastic

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene is a type of plastic with good impact resistance, relatively rigid and lightweight. It makes up the majority of the shells of our household appliances.

#Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Using recycled plastic in our products guarantees that less plastic is produced and limits our contribution to the greenhouse gas surplus.

We know very well that the extraction, transformation and transportation of plastic is an industrial process that generates a lot of pollution.

We reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, which meant 520 tonnes of CO2 was saved in 2020 alone, which is equivalent to driving 50x around the Earth by car! Thanks to using recycled plastic.

Did you know?

Greenhouse gas is a gas that occurs naturally in our atmosphere. What causes global warming of our planet is the excess greenhouse gas generated by human activity.

#Resource depletion savings

According to UNEP, resource extraction has more than tripled since 1970. When manufacturing our devices, the use of recycled plastic enables us to save more than 60% on the resources, such as oil, coal, metals…. and particularly water!

Earth is called the blue planet because water covers three-quarters of its surface. However, did you know that only 1% of it is drinkable?

Earth's resources are limited, and our over-consumption does not help.

Carbon offset

What does CarbonNeutral® product mean?

The carbon emissions arising from the raw materials, manufacturing, packaging and distribution of the product have been calculated and offset under The CarbonNeutral Protocol, the leading carbon neutrality framework.

Where do the carbon credits come from?

To offset the emissions associated with each product, Thales works with Natural Capital Partners – experts in carbon neutrality and climate finance – to purchase the equivalent volume of carbon credits from a range of emission reduction projects worldwide.

  • Acre Amazonian Rainforest REDD+, Brazil
  • Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve REDD+, Indonesia
  • Community Reforestation, Uganda
  • Solar Energy and Mobile Payment, East Africa
  • Montana Grasslands, USA

How do I know Thales will purchase offsets equivalent to the number of products purchased?

Each year, Thales will report to Natural Capital Partners the number of CarbonNeutral® products purchased. Natural Capital Partners will retire the volume of carbon credits equivalent to the products' total footprint, from the projects above. A certificate will be issued to confirm.
