Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) is built with open sourced technology which lets customers take advantage of the innovations delivered by both Hortonworks and the rest of the open-source community. Additionally, Thales ProtectFile gives administrators access controls to restrict data access on a granular level. Thales ProtectFile is used in conjunction with Thales KeySecure for centralized policy and key management, and comprehensive logging capabilities for customer audit requirements.

Thales Luna HSMs are used to secure the sensitive master encryption key across the Hortonworks Data Platform to enable transparent and automated encryption. The benefits of using Thales HSMs with Ranger KMS include: Secure generation, storage, and protection of the master key on FIPS 140-2 level 3 validated hardware*.
